On Tuesday of this week, as the President prepared to give his speech on the war in Afghanistan, 140 members of the NH National Guard said goodbye to their families as they were deployed to that conflict. We'll take a look at the President's plan in just a few moments but first, a reminder of the sacrifices demanded by war - and who makes them.

Soundup: Guard Disk 19:17:43 ** Drewniak giving orders
Track: By any measure, SSGT. Glen Drewniak has more than served his time. He joined the army out of high school, and after 7 years active duty, joined the NH Guard. Within a year, 9/11 happened and he spent nearly a year in Afghanistan. That was 5 years ago. Now he's headed back.- and this time he's in charge of hundreds of soldiers.
Bite: Guard Disk 18:24:13 AS YOU LOOK BACK TO YOUR FIRST DEPLOYMENT, WHAT WERE THE BIGGEST LESSONS YOU LEARNED….Be patient….different culture and way of life…can be frustrating…you're there to help them…that's the way they live.upon my soldiers 18;24:51
Bite: Guard Disk 18:32:01 HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR MISSION TO YOUR FAMILY? Going to help someone - a country - that is in the process of trying to rebuild their country - and doing everything we can to make sure their home is as safe as ours.
Bite: Guard Disk 18;29:40 It's really sad but I'm really proud of him.
Bite: Guard Disk 18;28:04 It's hard. But we love our guys and have faith in what they're doing. We appreciate each day what they do - and just being there fore each other and letting people know that there will be hard times but there will be people there to help them through.
Bite: Guard Disk 18:27;40 DO YOU EXPECT YOU WILL BE GVING ADVICE TO OTHER MOTHERS AND WIVES WHO HAVE NOT BEEN THROUGH THIS? The Captain's wife and I head up the FRG - the Family Readiness Group We meet once a month - and do potlucks with the families.
Bite: Guard Disk 19;28:05 Please know that while you're in Afghanistan, you will be in our thoughts and prayers. We will do all we can…Gen. Riddell - are available to do errands…shoveling snow …Riddell is particularly good with diapers.
Track: As 140 Guardsmen turned to the audience - it became obvious the formality of the ceremony barely contained the emotions filling the room.
Bite: Guard Disk 19;42:40 "Hoo - ah" About Face - applause
Bite: Guard Disk 19:50:02 I'd love to stand up here and make all kinds of guarantees - say we're not going to go in harm's way - but I can't do that. What I can tell you is - I wouldn't ask these soldiers to do anything I wouldn't do myself. And that's not to give you comfort - there is nothing I can tell you to give you comfort as you send your loved one off to war. But it is to let you know that we're going to get through this together, and together we will get through it.
Bite: Guard Disk 19:53:55 Ascend to victory, men!
Track: An hour after that call for victory, the President spoke, confirming his plan tvoo send another 30,000 troops to Afghanistan.
Bite: Obama Speech Disk 20;13:52 I make this decision because I am convinced that our security is at stake in Afghanistan and Pakistan. This is the epicenter of violent extremism practiced by al Qaeda. It is from here that we were attacked on 9/11, and it is from here that new attacks are being plotted as I speak. This is no idle danger; no hypothetical threat. In the last few months alone, we have apprehended extremists within our borders who were sent here from the border region of Afghanistan and Pakistan to commit new acts of terror. And this danger will only grow if the region slides backwards, and al Qaeda can operate with impunity. We must keep the pressure on al Qaeda, and to do that, we must increase the stability and capacity of our partners in the region. 20:14;42
